A Trip to Burundi, Africa, With Rosemary Zook

It was a great pleasure to have Rosemary Zook with us on Sunday, May 4, to speak about her trip to Africa in February.

After church we hosted a Potluck Meal, and the Ellisforde church came up the hill to join us.

We then went upstairs to the Sanctuary for Rosemary's presentation.

In a preview of her presentation she wrote:

THARS International was started by David Niyonzima, a native of Gitega, Burundi. He was a teacher in a school there, when the Tutsi’s came with guns and began killing everyone they could find. David hid, and escaped being killed. He felt that God had saved his life so he must do something to stop this terrible situation. So, he started the THARS organization: Trauma Healing and Reconciliation Services…"

The THARS Complex in Burundi, Africa.

"My trip was a most humbling experience. It was also rewarding, hard work, a lot of fun, and many, many other things. The team I worked with consisted of people from the United States and Canada, and the Congo, as well as local employees of the Burundi THARS. We didn’t all speak the same language, but we all knew how to work."

Rosemary, on the left...

...and the rest of the volunteers on the trip.

"We worked at the THARS complex by leveling a hill and building a parking lot, one shovel full at a time, planting a garden (with the children’s help), working with children both at local schools and at the complex. We also shared devotional time, speaking and singing in different languages. This was a rewarding experience for all.”

The parking lot work site.

Clearly it was rewarding, but the reward didn't come without courage, some sacrifice, and lots of hard work. Thank you for taking the leap of faith that took you to Africa, Rosemary, and for coming to tell us about it, and to challenge us to look for our own opportunities to serve.

Update on Raven Rock Ranch

Scott Hylton sent an update on Raven Rock Ranch, our March Mission.

Here is Scott presenting the check from Whitestone church to Justin Matts, counselor at the Ranch, and son of the founders, Sandy and Tim Matts.

Also present is John Dammeral, Director of Liberty Road Foundation, an organization that works with non-profits on funding and volunteer services. Scott is a member of that organization.

The exciting news is that the Liberty Road Foundation has decided to match grants to the Ranch up to $40,000. That means our donation has doubled!

Scott also attended a volunteer training session at the Ranch. Here, Sandy and Tim Matts greet the volunteers and explain what they will do.

Volunteers are trained in the proper way to lead a horse in therapy sessions.

Finally, Scott tells us the open space beyond the fences is where the brand new covered arena will be built.

Thanks to the generosity of you and others like you!

Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

Kulp Bible College says farewell to Global Mission workers
Goodbye celebration for the Hills in Nigeria
The sending-forth ceremony organized by the Kulp Bible College (KBC) in Kwarhi, Nigeria, turned into a piece of arts and cultural theater as more than 10 tribes staged their traditional dances in honor of a man and woman of God who have just concluded their mission work in a challenging situation in northeastern Nigeria.
Carl and Roxane Hill started their work in Nigeria in December 2012 despite the unceasing security challenges in the country, especially in the region where they stayed. In an interview in their first year of stay, they stated that "both of us have always had a passion for teaching God's Word." They lived in Adamawa, one of the states which has been placed under a state of emergency for more than a year.
Carl and Roxane both taught at Kulp Bible College, which is the highest theological seminary of Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN), the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria.
During the ceremony, representatives of the college shared their gratitude with the couple: "You were open to everybody." They said this motivated people to feel free with them.
"Your humility encouraged us to live as brothers and sisters,' said the acting provost of the college, Yamtikariya J. Mshelia. She also acknowledged all the assistance Roxane and Carl provided to the needy during their stay.
EYN president Samuel D. Dali shared that the Hills are planning to form church congregations in the United States, and he is hoping that EYN will send pastors to work there.
Dr. Dali arrived at the program late after having helped travel around the community searching for water points. He was able to share the good news that they have discovered four units and had already drilled three bore holes at the EYN secondary school and one outside KBC for the community. Water scarcity is one of the major problems of the area.

Students of the college represented various tribes such as Margi, Bura, Chibok, Glavda, Fali, Ga'anda, Kanuri, Fulani, Kamuwe, and Kilba, and they came in with traditional dances one after the other while others presented special gifts. Other tribes such as Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo were also represented, presenting their traditional or cultural food.
The event was concluded with a fellowship meal at the college library.
Other high dignitaries present at the occasion included Rebecca Dali, the former EYN president Filibus K. Gwama and his wife Easter, and the EYN administrative secretary, Zakariya Amos. Various college staff and tribe representatives attended the event as well.

  • We would love to have you join us at the Global Mission dinner on July 4! Contact mission@brethren.org for one complimentary ticket per advocate.

  • Service opportunities
The Church of the Brethren is seeking individuals or married couples to serve as Global Mission workers with Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN), the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria. Workers are needed for the following areas:
    • Teacher/consultant with Kulp Bible College
    • Agricultural worker with EYN's Rural Development Program
    • General medical practitioner with EYN's Medical Program
These contract positions will work under EYN leadership and are based in EYN headquarters in Kwarhi, Nigeria. Sponsorship and support is through the Church of the Brethren Global Mission and Service office. Stipend, housing, transportation, and a basic medical insurance plan are provided.
Global Mission and Service staff acknowledges that these positions are located in a high risk region with a history of violence. We ask potential mission workers to be aware of this as they prayerfully consider a call to serve with our Nigerian sisters and brothers.
    For more information, contact mission@brethren.org.

    Prayer requests
Pray for God's grace, love, peace, and mercy to reign upon Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria and all of Nigeria. Lift into God's care and comfort the victims of violence, abduction, home burning, and persecution. Pray for EYN development programs that seek to provide resources for the displaced.
As you pray, stay up to date on news and efforts regarding our sisters and brothers in Nigeria.
Pray for safe travels for Global Mission volunteers Carol Smith, Athanasus Ungang, Ilexene and Kayla Alphonse, and Robert and Linda Shank as they return to the United States for home leave. May God grant them restful and restorative time with friends and family and renewed energy to return to their work.
Pray for the many youth, advisors, and leaders of this summer's workcamp program. May they and those with whom they serve be richly blessed by the experience.
To remember these and other prayer concerns, please print and distribute the June 2014 Global Prayer Guide.

This year's pre-conference training sessions have been renamed "Congregational Vitality Workshops," and will be offered onWednesday, July 2. The morning session will be led by Stan Dueck, Director of Transforming Practices, and will focus on Restoring Hope: Transforming Lives and Congregations. Practical resources will be shared for helping people rediscover hope, hope that will transform congregations, creating vital communities of faith. I (Donna Kline, Director of Deacon Ministry) will offer the afternoon session on The Role of Congregations in Mental Health, presenting ways that faith communities and people engaged in mental health recovery can work together to educate their communities about mental illness, and equip them to develop supportive responses through relationships and practices that facilitate recovery.
Both workshops are relevant for deacons, as well as for others in church leadership positions. Register online with your credit card, ordownload a paper form (PDF) and pay by check.

The Annual Conference office is in the swing of preparations for the Church of the Brethren's Annual Conference July 2-6 in Columbus, Ohio. Columbus is vibrant and boasts many activities and sight-seeing opportunities for people of all ages.

The official Conference hotel is the Hyatt, and is in the same building as the conference center. But the Crowne and Drury hotels are connected by skywalks. “To have 75 percent of our rooms adjacent to the convention center is amazing,” said Chris Douglas, director of the Annual Conference Office.

Restaurant and food options are also convenient, as well as numerous. “You can’t beat the food court next to the conference center,” shared Chris. And only a block away is the North Market, which features 35 merchants of different ethnic foods, fresh produce, flowers, spices, and other gifts. Across the street is Bareburger, a restaurant where you can build a burger from a variety of meats (grass-fed, organically raised animals) and ingredients. Jon Kobel, Annual Conference assistant, also recommended the Northstar Cafe, one of several great restaurants in the Short North District, less than a mile from the convention center.

Columbus promises many sights to see. One isGerman Village, an original settlement that has been restored to its old glory. “We’re offering a bus tour for non-delegates,” said Jon. “Tickets can still be purchased online.” The Columbus Zoo and Center of Science and Information (which features a Sherlock Holmes exhibit) are both top-rated attractions in the country.

“If you’re looking for beauty in creation,” said Chris, “Franklin Park, where the BBT Fitness Challenge 5k walk/run will be, is magnificent.” Within walking distance from the conference center, Brethren baseball fans can also see the Columbus Flyers AAA team, who will be in town the week of Conference. “On Saturday night we’re having an intergenerational gathering, co-sponsored by theOutdoor Ministries Association,” said Jon. “We will have a lot of fun and games, and concerts too.”

Annual Conference in Columbus promises to be a Spirit-led, fun-filled gathering. Online registration closes June 3, so be sure to visitwww.brethren.org/ac soon!

9) One man’s journey to all 44 churches in Southern Pennsylvania District
Ridgeway Church of the Brethren signBy Scott Nedrow
While sitting at our District Conference in 2011, I turned to my pastor and whispered that I suddenly felt a need to visit all 44 congregations in our district. His look of question probably matched my confused feeling, for even as the words left my mouth I had no idea why I had the need to do this. I wasn’t sure I had the time, or the energy, to carry it through. Up to this point, I had only visited a few other congregations outside of Mechanicsburg, which I have been part of since birth. All I knew for sure was that I was being nudged for some unknown reason to take this venture.
